The ocean is a vast and beautiful place, filled with creatures both big and small. As a child, it can be easy to take it for granted, but it's important to remember that we all have a responsibility to look after the ocean and its inhabitants. Here are some things children can do to help protect the ocean.

  1. Reduce plastic waste - Plastic is one of the biggest threats to the ocean. As a child, you can help by using reusable water bottles and lunch containers instead of disposable ones. You can also remind your parents to bring reusable shopping bags when they go to the store.

  2. Be a mermaid and make waves. Thats right tell adults and other children the importance of taking care of our planet and ocean. You have a voice - use it.

  3. Don't litter - Litter can be harmful to the ocean and the creatures that live in it. As a child, you can make sure you throw your trash away in a bin and encourage others to do the same.
  4. Learn about ocean conservation - Educating yourself about the ocean and the challenges it faces is a great way to help protect it. You can read books, watch documentaries, or even attend classes or workshops on ocean conservation.
  5. Volunteer - There are many organizations that work to protect the ocean and its inhabitants. As a child, you can volunteer with these organizations by participating in beach cleanups, helping with fundraising events, or spreading awareness about the importance of ocean conservation.

Planet Mermaid supports WDC with saving oceans and helping young children learn about how to support the sea. Below is a young mermaid who won a competition ran by Planet Mermaid and WDC.

Support sustainable fishing - Many of the fish we eat come from the ocean, but some fishing practices can be harmful to the environment. As a child, you can encourage your parents to buy sustainably sourced fish and seafood.

In conclusion, as children, we have the power to make a difference in protecting the ocean and its inhabitants. By reducing plastic waste, not littering, learning about ocean conservation, volunteering, and supporting sustainable fishing practices, we can all play a part in looking after the ocean for generations to come. So let's do our part and help protect the ocean!
